Nanaimo Sunday Bird Walk, north side of the Englishman River Estuary, Parksville
August 25, 2002, 8:50 a.m. to 12:05 p.m.
Weather: sunny, calm winds, about 20º C, high tide 7:19 a m.
Observers: Sunday birders (18 of us including a visitor from Germany and two first timers)
Number of Species: 61
Highlights: We watched in anticipation as a very dark gull with a unusual flight pattern made it’s way to shore and landed in a flock of California Gulls. We watched as he had a bath and then began to preen himself. After close examination through our scopes, we identified the dark brown bird as a Parasitic Jaeger--the first one ever seen on a Sunday Birdwalk. It was an awesome sighting! Surprisingly enough many of the Black-bellied and Semipalmated Plover were still in breeding plumage. Black & Vaux’s Swifts and a large flock of Black-throated Gray Warblers showed up near the parking lot, just before we left.
