As someone with relatives who fought in WW2, yes, of course I (and I expect many other British people) are offended by such lazy condesending drivel when for over a year Britain stood up alone to Hitler. I would also have to whole-heartedly agree with the comment that it was the Red Army that broke the Wehrmacht, however an uncomfortable fact that might be for the Western powers.

Hey, don't forget Canada there!

Even though I did come on here the other day and call out Dennis with a "Bull" comment about his assertion that SLC's were made by Meopta; reading through this thread reminds me why I spend LONG periods of time away from this forum. Not pointing fingers, as I myself have been part of the "socializing" a time or two. But every time I come back and start reading some of these, it confirms why I do not miss not being a regular.

Probably sounds condescending, and I am sure there are a lot of folks on here that would be fun to hang out with and converse with. But, I often think when I read some of this stuff- " I must have something better to do to utilize my time while I continue to rotate on this sphere".

Cheers B :) ( OK- that sounds like a better use- time to go hang out with the family)

I know it's a Texas phrase, because that's what Sheldon says on "The Big Bang Theory." ;) He adds a sir or madam or mam at the end.

In northeastern New Jersey where I'm originally from, we respond to thank you by saying: fagetaboutit!

You can find out more about this stuff (RB, that is) on Holger's Website:

De nada would be the fagetaoutit reply here.

Reading up on it

Whoa :eat:

Yes you did help out a bit, but it was the Russians that broke the Nazi back.

PS Who's drifting off topic now?
Answer: Both of us! Its socialising.

Lee,

More than a bit I'd say. History is always undergoing revision but facts are facts.

Read here about the Lend-Lease Aid supplied to Russia during WWII by the USA.

This of course was going on while Americans were allied with the British on the Western Front.

308, you're my kinda guy. So much crap and wasted bandwidth in this thread. Like a few others, it's why I spend so little time here over the years.

CS:

I agree with you , many wasted posts here, and mine is the same.
And I wonder about that long list of binoculars you have at the bottom
of your post.

What is the purpose of that?

Oh Lord, a love fest. you two lovebirds get a room, it's embarrassing.

Stephen, if you really mean "rotate on" and not "with" this sphere, esp. taking that with the tech. diagram supplied, I respectfully suggest your time might be better utlized here. But this thread might still be an exception - I wonder if it's realised by now that criticising it has caused a self-referential spiral.

Winchester Boy and WW II

Winchester Boy

Lee

To my horror my wife has pointed out that calling a Yankee a 'boy' can be taken as an insult.

Is this true? We talk about 'fan-boys' on here so I got used to thinking 'boy' was an OK word.

308, if you were offended by being called Winchester Boy, which I only intended as a playful friendly greeting, then I apologise unreservedly.

For the record, Europe has much of the world to thank for escaping the tyranny of Hitler's ambitions, including of course the USA who also helped with the post-war re-construction of Europe.

Often unsung contributors to the defeat of the Nazis include Ghurkas, Indians and Canadians who seem to get forgotten.

Lee,

Of course, much more than a bit. I was surprised by the sudden jump back to the 1940's and I hit the ball back with a lot of English top-spin, if you see what I mean.

I nearly said the US helped a bit eventually, but got the feeling there was a pot of worms opening up so I restrained myself.

Hope I have set the record straight with my other post.

Lee, not to mention the rest of our UK friends, did not deserve that.

Beth

I missed all the excitement on here last night so I can only guess what you were defending me, and our little island nation, from.

Thanks :t:

Lee, well, you'll also have to apologise to old boys (sensu Britannis) of Winchester College. For some time I thought that the hapless object of your wrath was a Wykehamist in exile (and you were also dissing his school for good measure), till I chanced across the ref. to his rifle in the other thread.

Maybe in some circles it could be taken as an insult. Seems to be more a racial issue than in general. For the most part it is used like vato. Depending on the tone with which it is said, nearly anything could be an insult, or a term of endearment.

As for the British speaking Deutsch, I'm pretty sure that was settled before we entered the war. The battle of Britian had pretty much ground the German war machine to a stop. I do think we shouldered a heavy portion of the load in pushing the Germans out of the occupied countrys and there was the little issue in the pacific.

But I think our greatest contribution to the war effort before December 8th 1941 was our manufacturing might, we were untouched by the war on the home front.

No problem, Lee.

But one more clarification is needed beyond the enormous amount of money spent on Lend Lease sent to Russia.

Hitler would not have been fighting a 2 front war after he invaded Russia in June 1941 if the USA had not entered the war in December 1941.

Enough is enough, talk about optics please, otherwise posts will disappear and even members will disappear from BF if they keep pushing our patience in the optics forums. Going off at a temporary tangent is one thing, totally dominating the thread with off topic nonsense is another.

We have a perfectly good off-topic forum called ruffled feathers where you can talk about pretty much anything.

You have been warned.

Thanks,
