UK Ornithology Course (1 Viewer)

Hi,

I'm new to the forum and live in Scotland.

I was wondering whether anybody could recommend a UK ornithology course which is home based? I don't want to get a job in ornithology, I just want to learn about all things birds and I know I could just read books but I find that I need to be asked questions to get it to sink in. There are quite a few out there, ranging from £30 to £400 but are any of them any good?

Thanks, in advance,

TM

Hi TM and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

All things Scottish can be found here. Also, keep an eye on threads titled something like Scottish Bashes; we try to meet up occasionally and they're always great fun. You'd be most welcome to join us on another if you can manage.

The BTO do a range of courses mostly online though: Training courses

The best way of gaining knowledge is spending time in the field with other birders - look for local groups (general Wildlife Trusts often do visits, as well as specialised birding groups), or just chat to other birders when you're out and about (most are friendly!).

Welcome to BF.

You can learn a lot just by reading and taking part in threads on here (lots of dross, but lots of useful info of course ;-) ). There is also the Opus on here, a kind of online encyclopedia of bird knowledge.

I do love how your username includes a displaced 'd' ironically, although presumably that was inadvertent?

Hi dantheman.

Haha, yes, that was inadvertent. The username stems from my background as a fell runner and when I once thought I was lost, my running companion told me 'you're never lost, just temporarily misplaced'.

Thanks for all the replies so far and thanks Delia for the link to the Scotland section, I shall have a look at that later on.

I've done some of the BTO ID courses and they're great but it's not really bird ID I want a course on but more things like, basic bird biology, nest building, mating, migration, etc. Like I said, I can get it all from books but I like to be tested on it for to write answers to essay questions so that it all sinks in.

I've not come across any courses that cover those areas in any detail - they may exist but I wouldn't know where to look. Good luck.

Actually the "d" isn't misplaced, it's just the username is too long to fit in the space (click on it to see the name on the User account, there's no space before the 'd'.

This does happen to some names if your screen isn't very wide, like when I reduce the width of the browser to be able to see another document at the same time.

Yes it is. For the exact reasons you mention lol.
