I took this photo of what I believe is a wasp whilst on holiday close to Delray Beach in Florida. Can anyone tell me whether it is a wasp and what species it could be, please?

Thank you very much, Wildwood. The fact that it is scraping wood for a nest is interesting!

Edit: I think I have now identified the wasp as Polistes metricus, thanks to you.
