Identification
- Slate grey back, upper wings and head
- White underparts
- Deep grey shoulders and upper-wing coverts
- Deep grey "M" pattern
- Grey and white forehead
- White underwing
- Black diagional band from bend of wing to body at base of underwing
Distribution
New Zealand: found on Rangitira Island (Chatham Islands) and adjacent seas.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Pastures, low shrublands, and tall coastal forest.
Behaviour
The nest is a burrow under the forest canopy, lined with leaves. A single white egg is laid.
