Identification

  • Grey brown
  • Lower breast and belly streaked black
  • Black barred undertail
  • Pale face
  • Dark eyeline
  • Dark crown

Male: black and white streaks in upper breast
Female: rufous and white streaks

Distribution

Endemic to Australia: found in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Victoria.

Taxonomy

Subspecies[1]

There are 3 subspecies:

  • C. p. melanotus:
  • North-eastern Queensland (southern Cape York Peninsula)
  • C. p. picumnus:
  • C. p. victoriae:

Habitat

Drier open forest and woodland clearings, riverine woodland.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes ants, insects, invertebrates, some nectar and sap.

Breeding

Both sexes build the nest in a tree hollow from grasses. The female incubates the eggs.
