Identification
14–18 cm (5½-7 in)
- Grey brown
- Lower breast and belly streaked black
- Black barred undertail
- Pale face
- Dark eyeline
- Dark crown
Male: black and white streaks in upper breast
Female: rufous and white streaks
Distribution
Endemic to Australia: found in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Victoria.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 3 subspecies[1]:
- C. p. melanotus:
- North-eastern Queensland (southern Cape York Peninsula)
- C. p. picumnus:
- Central and eastern Queensland to central Victoria and eastern South Australia
- C. p. victoriae:
- South-eastern South Australia (south-eastern Queensland through eastern New South Wales to south-western Victoria)
Habitat
Drier open forest and woodland clearings, riverine woodland.
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet consists of insects, both adult and larval and includes ants and spiders, also some nectar and sap.
Breeding
Both adults build the nest in a tree hollow from grasses. The female incubates the eggs. There is usually only a single brood.
