Texas was the first state to develop the concept of birding and wildlife viewing trails, an innovation helped by the fact that it is one of the top birding destinations in the USA. In 2000, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department completed The Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, which was the first set of driving trails, directing you to the best places to find such diverse wildlife as birds, butterflies, bats or pronghorns. The Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail is divided into 3 regions: Upper Texas Coast (UTC); Central Texas Coast (CTC); Lower Texas Coast (LTC). Each region is divided into several driving loops, with full directions and information on the birding at each site.
At the present time, 4 Trails have been developed, but it is not known if TPWD is working on a 5th trail for the Trans Pecos region in West Texas.
