Identification

18-20 cm
Mostly rufous with slightly pale side of head, chestnut crown, and duller underside. Eye is orange.

Distribution

South America: found in south-eastern and south-central Brazil to north-eastern Paraguay.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].
Placed in genus Hylocryptus by Gill and Donsker[2].

Habitat

Mainly along wooded riverland, locally in lowland forests.

Behaviour

Feeds on the ground for invertebrates, often among leaf litter.

Nesting in a tunnel dug into an earthen bank.
