Four subspecies recognized:2
- S. e. erythrothorax from Sierra Leone east to southern Nigeria
- S. e. gabonensis (Gabon Forest Robin) in Cameroon, Gabon and Bioko
- S. e. sanghensis (Sangha Robin) in the Central African Republic
- S. e. xanthogaster (Eastern Forest Robin) from Cameroon east to Zaire, Uganda and adjacent Sudan
Some authorities1,3 recognise these taxa as four full species.
