Distribution

Tropical sub-Saharan Africa.

Taxonomy

Four subspecies recognized:¹

• S. e. erythrothorax from Sierra Leone east to southern Nigeria
• S. e. gabonensis (Gabon Forest Robin) in Cameroon, Gabon and Bioko
• S. e. sanghensis (Sangha Robin) in the Central African Republic
• S. e. xanthogaster (Eastern Forest Robin) from Cameroon east to Zaire, Uganda and adjacent Sudan

Some authorities² recognise these taxa as four full species.
