Chlorostilbon lucidus
Identification
Male: Head mostly green with blue limited, not surrounding eye; bill red with black tip. Upperparts green, contrasting with dark blue, forked tail.
Female: differs from the male in having a white streak behind the eye, whitish throat and breast, pale grey tips to the tail and a longer area of black on the bill.
Distribution
South America: found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
Four subspecies are recognized:
- C. a. pucherani:
- Eastern Brazil (Maranhão and Ceará to Paraná)
- C. a. aureoventris:*
- C. a. igneus:
- North-western Argentina (Jujuy and Chaco to Mendoza and San Luis)
- C. a. berlepschi:
- Southern Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul) to Uruguay and north-eastern Argentina
*This species is sometimes listed as Chlorostilbon lucidus in which case the nominate subspecies also changes to lucidus.
Habitat
Forest edges, scrub and savanna.
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet consists mainly of nectar.
