Identification
29cm. A rather big pitta-like bird:
- Plumage entirely black or with varying amounts of rufous-brown on head and various parts of body
- Dark brown iris
- Black legs and bill
Sexes similar, juveniles not described.
The colour variations are probably related to age and geographical locations but they are still poorly understood.
Distribution
Endemic to New Guinea.
A restricted-range species with a little known distribution.

This is a monotypic species[1].
