Identification
19-21cm
- Sooty-brown plumage
- Narrow, rectangular, white rump patch
- Slightly forked tail
- Dark bill with tube on top.
Similar Species
Distribution
Endemic to the Azores.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
It was formerly included in Band-rumped Storm Petrel.
Habitat
Pelagic, but seems to stay around the Azores all year.
Behaviour
Flight
Quick wing beats between glides on bowed wings.
Breeding
Breeding season May to early July (unlike Band-rumped Petrel who breeds in winter). It nests in colonies close to the sea in rock crevices and lays a single white egg. Nests are visited only at night.
