Identification

13 cm (5 in)

  • Cobalt blue crown and chin
  • Black forehead
  • Red hind-neck
  • Turquoise line round the eyes and above the forehead
  • Green underparts
  • Black wings with broad green edging and a yellow-orange line on the wing-coverts

Distribution

Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 3 subspecies[1]:

  • T. c. cearensis:
  • Forests of north-eastern Brazil (Ceará)
  • T. c. corallina:
  • Eastern Brazil (Pernambuco to Bahia)
  • T. c. cyanocephala:

Habitat

They are to be found in the canopy of light forest, forest edges and second growth

Behaviour

The diet consists of fruit, berries and also insects.
