A friend of mine called and they're actually out of stock. The website still allows orders, but you're supposed to get an email indicating the stock situation.

i was told they are expecting them in 2 weeks, they have 20 customers waiting as of this morning. Still a steal. Nikon is probably getting rid of all the body only units and after that I presume you will only be able to buy a kit.

Cheers,

just come home to the dreaded "out of stock" e-mail myself, but with assurances that they will be getting new stock in a couple of weeks.
Hope there as good as there word

If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is

http://www.opticsplanet.net/demo.html

Some more checking on their website reveals that this spectacular priced Nikon Fieldscope 82mm ED Spotting Scope Straight Body Model 7554 appears on their "excess factory refurbished demo inventory" page also, but when you actually click on this item there is no mention of demo/refurbished.

I would call and confirm since demo units may not come with original packaging. Even more important, they mention that it comes with warranty, but are not clear on specifics, so do you get a Nikon 25 year warranty or not?

There is nothing wrong with purchasing demo/refurbished products, but at least you should know for sure before plunking down $$$.

Nikon U.S.A 25 year warranty

In addition to the Nikon U.S.A 25 year warranty, there is also Lifetime $10.00 No-Fault Repair/Replacement Policy

I agree price is good if you don't mind if the Nikon Fieldscope 82mm ED Spotting Scope Straight Body Model 7554 being offered for sale is NOT "new" but actually "Excess Factory Refurbished Demo Inventory[/B][/B]". Doesn't hurt to call them up to confirm whether it's covered by a Nikon U.S.A 25 year warranty.

Hi JMI,

I have the 82ED, and this August paid $1069 for the new US #8337 kit (I realize you're in England) which comes with the 25-75x Zoom and the case. I also have the 30x Wide, and the 50x Wide eyepieces. The 50x Wide is really kind of a specialty eyepiece on the 82ED. I mainly got it because it's my prime eyepiece (27x Wide) for my 50ED.

If you were to going to start with just one eyepiece I would very heartily, and I think most people would agree, recommend either the 25-75x Zoom, the 30x Wide, or even the 38x Wide instead of the 50x.

The 50x is good, if seeing conditions are great, but heat haze can easily render it difficult to use at times, also the depth of field (not the field of view, although of course the fov is smaller as well) on the 50x on the 82ED is very short and can be somewhat frustrating at times. If your order is backordered maybe you can give some thought to this and change it for the better.

Of course maybe some folks could get on with the 50x quite well. Does anyone else have any thoughts along this line?

Also the angled versus straight decision deserves very serious consideration as well. For me angled is much more usable.

Just trying to help.

The zoom is good in finding the bird. Then, when I have the bird in my crappy scope, I still go to 40-45x to look at it. So, many people are happy at 30x, some more at 40-45x, very few at 50x, as it is more work to find the bird, with no zoom.

well there's a suprise!!

I've just been informed that there's no new stock coming in so I'll be recieving a full refund.
I must admit I expected better from optics planet especially when restocking assurances were given.
same old story, if it seems to good to be true it probably is!

82 deal back at Optics Planet

Hi everyone

looks like they may have a few more of these in stock- i just ordered the 82mm Nikon ED fieldscope for $550, straight-thru, body only.

Added the 38X wide-angle to get me started. comes with case, according to advert.

product is listed under their "blowout" section, and does indicate the unit is a demo.

needed another spotting scope like i needed, er, another spotting scope (or is that supposed to be "hole in the head"?) oh well just couldnt pass up on a deal like this one.

dont get your hopes up, I am on the phone to optics planet as we speek and they are telling me that they have no stock or have had no stock of this scope. further more they cant understand why its on there web site.

well i got a confirm e-mail about 4 hours after i placed my order yesterday that the items have shipped, with a projected delivery date of 12/27.

like you said i am just taking a wait and see attitude but hopefully this will be the real deal.

doesnt look like they have updated their webspace to announce "out of stock" status as early afternoon today.

i touched base with their customer service today, and their rep. confirmed that the scope is "a refurbished, demo, or otherwise one that had been returned to Nikon to be brought up to factory specs". he confirmed via my order number that "you got the last one".

warranty is 90-days, that's it, but OP offers an "extented warranty", 3 years "anything that goes wrong we will repair or replace", for $40. normally not a fan of these things, but went ahead and added it on just in case- seemed like a fair price.

rep further added that he had "sold about 10 of these fieldscopes and not one complaint or return in the bunch", so, i'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I too placed a order 21st but got the dreaded regret letter.

Optics planet have the Factory Demo Nikon Fieldscope III Straight BODY ONLY - $380

That doesn't seem such a good deal given that the Pentax 65 ED body (original version, not II despite what the headings on Amazon and Adorama websites say) is going for $406 new right now.
