Does anyone know if post-breeding gatherings of BTDs are normal?

I was wild-camping near Gairloch last week and before sunrise was amazed to see several rafts of 20+ close inshore. Slightly later, a party of 43 (mixed stages of moult, several juvs) were just metres offshore in the corner of one bay.

Also saw three RTDs 20m offshore directly below my tent, and a summer-plumaged GND flew by. (Plus Sea Eagle, Basking Shark and lots of other goodies.) All this before 8am.

Glorious morning - but is this a regular phenomenon at this time of year?
