What mid Wales Bird of Prey was this? (1 Viewer)

Last friday afternoon I was driving along a typical mid wales valley within modest sized mountains north west of Welshpool on the A458.

A bird of prey flew across (10 metres above ground) the road at speed, wings beating rapidly.

It's physical shape and wing to body proportions were very similar to that of a swift. It had a slightly smaller than body size of a kestrel. Its upper body was dark in colour, but the contrast of surounding brighter foliage could have caused some of this affect.

Its tail was very short and combined with the body it made the sharp ^.^ jagged wings seem almost over sized in comparison.

It wasn't a kestrel or sparrowhawk, any ideas??? I'm guessing a hobby or merlin.

Sounds good for Hobby to me Paul. Not uncommon to find them high on the hills, catching dragonflies or looking out for a Pipit ..

Andy.

I would have thought your latter guess for that area. plus the low height and wing beats you have described. Merlin though is little more than thrush size if that helps.

Possibly not small enough for a Merlin and as some observers liken a Hobby to a very large Swift, I would plump for Hobby but it is only a plump. ;)
