I think, actually it is very good news for birds.

Warmer winters allow waterfowl to winter further north and west in Europe, resulting in better condition and smaller loses on migration.

Worth remembering, that cold winter is bad for wintering birds, and mild winter is usually good.
 
They were my thoughts also Jurek when I saw the report on Ceefax this morning. They missed the point that the birds have not disappeared, they just haven't had to travel so far to find food.
