Varanus Island (1 Viewer)

Here we go I am going to make a start with my story of the Ospreys, but included in this story is also my experience with the Marine Turtles and there will be notes on the environment of the Island. Wish me luck.:t:

Varanus Island the largest Island in the Lowendal Island Group, situated off the North West Coast of Western Australia. I obtained employment as a Janitor by Bond Petroleum to work at this isolated Island at a fortnight on and a fortnight off rotation. I arrived on the island at 1100am Tuesday 22nd of April 1986 and as the Helicopter descended I saw my first Osprey fly past the window, almost as if to welcome me. All of us new members gathered in the Amenity Building to be introduced to the rules and regulations and as I waited there I looked through the window from the beach below to the horizon of the Indian Ocean before me. I then saw my first Marine Turtle come out of the water and make its way up the small beach. This was most unusual for these creatures to nest at this time of the year. When I consider my eight years of involvement with these creatures I later I felt that it was another sign of welcome to me.

You bet there were plenty of Flatbacks, they were my favourite turtle mainly because they are as Australian as the Koala. I will be mentioning about the Turtles in this blog, I think you will enjoy reading the stories
