Killymarley (1 Viewer)

Hello.I'm Monahawk [ real name Simon ]. I am new to this game so I thought I might introduce you to my local patch in Co. Monaghan.
I've lived here for 7 years now having moved from England [a native of Sussex ]. Killymarley is a townland about 1.5 km east of Monaghan town off the busy N2 Dublin/Derry road.My road links up with the townland of Coolmain and is an area of small farms, bogland, hedgerows lined with mainly deciduous trees and a small number of conifers. It is set in gently rolling Drumlin country. Oh there is also a picturesque lorry yard and dump here too.
I have recorded 85 species here, not bad for a Irish midlands county. Highlights include Little Egret, Hen Harrier, Peregrine, Merlin,Whimbrel, Stonechat,Crossbill, Tree Sparrow, White Wagtail,Grasshopper Warbler and nesting Buzzards to name but a few.Its also a good area for the wonderful Irish Hare.
My aim is to write a blog each month, noting the wildlfe highlights in the area.I hope these blogs will be of interest to Irish [and U.K ] wildlife fans and give a little insight into an area within the county with the stoney grey soil.

Hi Simon,

Great to see a blog from a poorly covered area of the country.

I'm sure if you check the lakes this winter you'll find at least one Ring-necked Duck!!! :t: Perhaps there might be some interesting stuff on the lakes blown in with the recent bad weather like Great Northern Diver, Shag or Kittiwake?

The only bit of birding I've done in Monaghan is around Slieve Beagh in the summer (breeding Hen Harriers, Curlew, Grasshopper Warbler etc.).

There's definitely a lot of potential for some interesting discoveries for a keen local birder.

Keep up the good work.

All the best,
Niall

Thanks for the kind reply Niall.

Monaghan is definately under watched. There are only a handful of dedicated birders in this neck of the woods.
Having said that, Monaghan does throw up a few suprises now and then.

Thanks again.
