1/3/08 - Kipuka 'Ainahou

I got up extra early today for a 7AM start on the saddle, but fog, mist and drizzle forced me to abandon any hope for exploring on Powerline Road. Instead I spent yet another day wandering around in the shelter of the forests of kipuka 'ainahou, off of Pu'u O'o Trail. Aside from this disappointment, the weather was pleasant, and I got a lot of counts done for a half day. For the first time in about a month I observed the Hawai'i creeper in its usual area, in the middle of the forest West of the first meadow on the trail. It was cackling loudly in the tops of the large koa trees, which was a first. I didn't see anything else unusual.

My Sigma 10-20mm arrived, and I can't wait to photo some forestscapes! I am stuck on Mauna Kea until next Thursday, though.
