Where the tall mountain ash on the high ground they seem to touch the very sky
They now call it The Yarra Ranges though Sherbrooke it once was known by
Places such as Sherbrooke, Belgrave and Kallista in fancy I often do see
Those old wooded hills east of Melbourne will not fade from my memory.
The whistle of Puffing Billy climbing up the tracks through Selby that memory with me does remain
And the clouds of gray smoke billowing upwards from the engine exhaust pipe of the steam train
And when the train has passed on it's way to Gembrook quietness returns to the higher ground
And one can hear the white cockatoos squawking though their's is not such a pleasant sound.
The wind blowing up from Ferntree Gully is soughing in the high country trees
And the soft pipings of the crimson rosellas come floating to me in the breeze
And on top of the hill at Olinda the currawongs call in the rain
Of Sherbrooke now known as Yarra Ranges fond memories with me do remain.
In Birdsland the bellbirds are singing their bell like notes I fancy I hear
And though I now live far from Belgrave the hills to my thoughts ever near
It is not very hard to imagine and it seems easy to visualize
The raucous calls of the kookaburras on Terry's Hill before sunrise.
Kalorama, Upwey and Tecoma and Menzies Creek I often recall
South Belgrave, Sassafras, Monbulk and Upper Gully old places where gum trees grow tall
Clematis, Ferny Creek and One Tree Hill in fancy I see every day
And Emerald, Cockatoo and old Gembrook from me never seem far away.
