American Avocet

American Avocet (Recurvirostra americana)

This young one is almost a fledgeling. Notice the downy tail section. It can fly for short distances but it is still hanging out in the nesting area. The parents are no longer concerned about seagulls flying over. It has also started feeding by swiping the surface of the water side to side with its bill whereas last week it was still picking at individual bits.
Location
San Francisco Bay

July 3, 2011

A really lovely shot of this wee cutie - I see the bill has yet to start curving.
