What a brilliantly coloured crest he has, doesn't he Dave.

I'm not too sure that the name your guide gave you is the generally accepted species name by the usual world lists for your bird. That Purple-crowned (Cynanthus doubledayi) is only found in Mexico. Why does the Avibase site have to be down tonight LOL ... my research continues. I'll try and get back to you Dave.

know who Dave is!!

Ooops... sorry Andy - I'd gone round in so many circles trying to work out which bird it was I completely lost the plot I think.... just tried Avibase again, but the site is still down. I've found a St Kitts bird list though and they have a Antillean Crested Hummingbird on it and Falcon57 has a very similar image to yours in the Gallery: http://www.birdforum.net/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=484759.

What do you think?

I've asked one of the Opus Editors from the area for some assistance too.

I'm unsure. I have another photo with a head on view but am unable to post it in this thread as there only seems to be the facility for a Quick rather than Advanced reply. Is there a way I can do that? Unfortunately, the poor light doesn't help.

Thanks for your persistence which is appreciated.

Hi Andy - no you can't add pictures to comments in the Gallery.

However, I've now heard back from the Opus Editor who lives in the area and he said there's only one candidate for your bird ("cannot be anything but..." his words), and that is the Antillean Crested Hummingbird; there's two other hummers, both caribs, which are nothing like your one and don't have crests. Nos 141-143 on this list and in the CAPRIMULGIFORMES: Trochilidae section of the Avibase list.

If you want more re-assurance though you can post your pictures in the ID forum.

Many thanks for your time and trouble. I'm more than happy to accept both yours and his expertise.

Andy
