Auk of Inner Farne-The Guillemot

Auk of Inner Farne-The Guillemot (Uria aalge)

You can't visit Inner Farne Island without seeing the population of this common auk of British coasts. Here they frequent cliff ledges on steep cliffs. It is amazing to think that when nesting they lay a single egg directly on a ledge that is pear shaped to prevent rolling off. The Guillemot incubates the egg by standing up!!!

When the new born is 3 weeks old it jumps off the cliff, and is cared for at sea by the male parent alone.

I thank you all for taking time to post your positive comments. I feel that it is important to photograph birds when they are flocking, or roosting. It brings a little more atmosphere to a picture. Auks such as Guillemots are usually in flocks at this time of year. Their life must be a challenge when faced with all the difficulties posed by weather variation in this exposed environment!!!
