Black Eagle
An impressive bird of prey, the Black Eagle is in its own genus characterized by its unique very short outer toe and weak legs. This is the nominate race. A larger race occurs in India. Found mostly in forested mountains and hills. This is an adult which appears all dark at a distance, but closer views reveal a yellow bill and feet. Note also small pale area at base of primaries. Its scientific name formerly misspelled "malayensis." Sometimes called Asian Black Eagle or Indian Black Eagle to avoid confusion with Verreaux's Eagle of Africa which used to also be called Black Eagle.
