Both shots look very good, it is the most common tern in my neck of the woods also.
 
I watched these birds feeding over a period of two hours and they would come closer after a while. This one was about 15m away at the closest and the wings filled two-thirds of the frame , top to bottom. I was able to crop it in Photoshop (the original file was a full JPEG of 6.1mgs) like this.
