I happened on this stunning sight last Sat., April 1, 2006. The Harris Hummingbird was long sought by Edward Harris, a friend of John J. Audubon, and was reported to hunt in small packs of two to three birds, sometimes even perching upon each other to gain a better view of potential prey from atop sturdy flower tops. Originally restricted to the SW U.S., they are thought to have spread northwest-ward looking for fertile habitat due to gradual loss of natural adobe mounds, to urban development.
