Thanks for showing us this wee guy. It's one of your grebes but I'm not sure which one..

So strange as they're rarely out of water, except in flight, as they don't walk very easily.

I'll move your thread to the ID forum but would still appreciate knowing where in America you're based, that information really helps with identification.
