Injured Green Heron (Butorides virescens)

This is an out of season Green Heron who's right leg appears to be injured. There are many snapping turtles in the marsh where this was taken, so maybe that is what happened.
Habitat
Freshwater Marsh
Location
Huntley Meadows, Alexandria, VA USA
Date taken
10/31/2004
Scientific name
Butorides virescens

Do you suppose it is still there and hasn't migrated because of its injured leg?

That is my guess. The bird was feeding without problem and flew off after a while so it seems like it is not in too bad of shape, though the leg does look pretty rough.
