We are staying in Northumberland near Rothbury this week.
A filthy day yesterday, rain all day and squally too, but I phoned the Lindisfarne NNR warden and he told me the Lindisfarne Helleborine were just about in flower. I would have kicked myself had I not gone to find them, being so near at flowering time, so off I went, 45 minutes each way and just over an hour there. Got very wet, conditions dreadful, but I did find this one plant and took an acceptable photo of it. Not highly satisfied with it but the best I could do in the circumstances. The wretched camera lens kept steaming up and it was a constant battle, but at least I've seen the plant and have a photo.
Once thought to be Dune Helleborine, recent genetic work has established that these plants are a distinct species endemic to the one small island of Lindisfarne.
