Maupiti Monarch (Pomarea pomarea)

Maupiti Monarch

(Pomarea pomarea), from Maupiti Island / Society Islands, extinct long time ago, only known from one drawing (and now a second ...)

the bird below is the female
Scientific name
Pomarea pomarea
I think a painting like this serves as a reminder to us all not to take anything on our planet for granted - global warming, deforestation and man's inefficiency and greed are all threats to the wilder world. I looked at the painting, expecting a description of a living species - and your description left me profoundly saddened that these beautiful creatures are no longer with us. Thank you for reminding me why I am a conservationist. The painting is lovely, too.
