Red-Tailed Hawk fledgling

This is a Red-Tailed Hawk nestling just days before fledging. Every evening, before dusk, the nestling stepped out of its nest in a tall, old Maple tree and walked out onto this tree branch tip to exercise its wings and learn to use the thermals and then returned to the nest. It would flap its wings and bounce up & down on the branch as if it were a diving board; but never let go of the branch until it was ready to fledge.

This is a still photo captured from a handheld SONY Camcorder mini-DV videotape. DigiScoped using a KOWA 824 spotting scope. Camcorder @ 12x optical zoom + KOWA @ 20x Magnification
