Goosanders

Painting till 3 in the morning often leads to detailed paintings that I find lacking in spontaneity. These Goosanders in Besanon are almost hand tame as they spend so much time with the local Mallards.
Equipment used
watercolour and cheap white paint
Oh Nick - this is heart-breakingly lovely. Please do some more along these lines - any exhibition would be stopped by this piece. Bravo!

Excellent work Nick, I agree with Tim, I would certainly be captivated by this in any exhibition.

Thanks for the comments, I suppose I seem less keen on this piece because it's a break from my usual style, still, I suppose the artist is never pleased with his own work and should listen to what others think. I wanted originally to create something with a more rapid and less fussy approach. I'll see what today brings. Am starting a singing Marsh Tit on brown card and two male Garganeys backlit behind some teasels. Ok, less internet, more painting!

I agree with the learned gentlemen above, it's a great picture, you can feel the winter chill! Geoff

I keep coming back to this one -- I love how you've handled the surface of the water. You're a master, Nick!

Luckily the water looks ok Jomo, I went against all my principles on this one! Once I'd painted in the water and it looked ok, I decided it looked too cold and had to wash over it again in an ochre and white mix, then it was too pale so out came the grey, then it was too flat, etc etc, this process kept me up till 3 in the morning and gave me a headache! Am planning to do some looser work this week, if I get the time. In any case, if people like this one, then the effort was worth it!

Having been out sketching this species today I can tell you I am very impressed by this one Nick. Its all there. The birds are spot on and the ochre tones in the reflections make it for me. Lovely painting Nick...

Cheers buzzard, though as I've already said, your Goosander sketch on your thread makes me green with envy!
