Sorry but as you can see from the title my knowledge of dragonflies is very limited to say the least.ID would be very welcome.

Really good picture John. It looks like a male Libellula depressa, Broad-bodied Chaser. One of the finest of dragonflies beautifully captured.
 
Yes it's a male Broad-bodied Chaser and not quite mature - there's still a bit of brown on the 'top' of the abdomen to turn blue
