A new dawn and a tale of monsters

This morning I was awakened very early by the bright sunshine so by 6.30am I was at Doffcocker. Only stayed there an hour or so but what an hour I had. The terns were in fine voice. I reckon there are approx 24 birds this year which is very high. Thought you might like to see the raft were it all happens. There are three rafts in total but they all in the main cram onto one. The terns were in fine voice, screaming constantly at one another and flying around. As I stood in one corner one tern flew towards me and preceded to dive for fish right in the edge and under my nose for a good ten minutes, repeatedly returning. A commotion also drew my attention and I then saw something I have never seen before. A coot with a nest full of chicks was calling in alarm. Not being able to see another bird I wondered what the problem was. I then saw a very large fin cutting through the water at the base of the nest. The fish then reared half out of the water and attempted to get in the nest!! Sadly the nest is too far away to get a photo but what a photo that would have made. It tried twice to do this before the other coot appeared and the fish made tracks. A thoroughly interesting morning :)

What a lovely start to your day and a lovely pic to remind you.. I counted 16 terns yesterday but some were out and about. I must get up there earlier than yesterday as the early morning light certainly shows them at their best. Its a shame they dont use the raft on the little lake as it is so much closer.

Ivan the light was wonderfully clear this morning but surprisingly bright. At 7am I was too warm to wear a coat. I was using 100iso 2 whole stops under at f11 and it was still over exposing! I was there just before dusk yesterday without a camera and naturally the terns were virtually walking at my feet on the grass lol typical.

Sounds like an interesting time, Annette. There's a few of these rafts (minus the chicken wire) at my local Reservoirs. Last time I went there was Terns on most of them, but also Gulls and Cormorants. So these rafts get well used. Great capture and post BTW.|=)|

You be careful you don't get eaten Annette, monsters from the deep an all that:eek!::eek!: Super shot:t:eek::)

Up in the morning is the name of the game Annette it certainly paid off for you Excellent capture.
