Leucistic Wild Turkey Hens (meleagris gallopavo)

After spending 4 hours driving the 8 mile road out into the coastal mudflats and marsh, made my way to exit and had 8 Turkeys scamper across the road in front of me, camera was still on passanger seat, so took a few hurried shots. Upon downloading found this image with 1 regular feathered bird and the 2 you see heading up the hill under the pines. The current term for this condition is Leucistic. Leucism is a genitic mutationthat prevents pigment from being properly depositedin a birds feathers. As a result the bird lack normal coloration and instead show various colors from blotchy white, to faint colored birds like shown here. Seems like diet has no effect of coloration. Leucism is a gentic deficiency, passed from one generation to next one. Birds have not been seen before according to sources, a record shot proves useful. :-)

Nice shot Bob,looks plenty sharp here.Know how wary those birds can be.Wonder what the odds are of encountering a leucistic, bearded hen?

Well spotted, Bob, (even if it was after getting home|=)|); great setting for them too

It's always fun when you see them about isn't it. You can learn to recognise them - I've got a Blackbird that comes to my window feeder, so I know he's doing OK. There was a Crow in the town, but I've not seen him for a bit.

Nice shot Bob.
