Orchis mascula - Early Purple Orchid

Orchis mascula - Early Purple Orchid (Orchis mascula)

Paid my first visit to Gop Hill last week and found lots of large Early Purple Orchids in bud and ready to break into flower. Returned yesterday to find that most of those plants has either been grazed or picked: I suspect the former, there are quite a lot of fierce looking hungry horses on the hill. The turf is very short and a nicely grown orchid spike would no doubt make a pleasant snack!
