Clamming Up (Melanitta americana)

Black Scoters take advantage of the high tide at Qualicum Beach for a good old-fashioned clam dig. The varnish clams are an invasive species imported in ballast water from Japan. They live in the highest substrate of the beach and are only accessible at high tide.
