Have Nest, need Mate (Colaptes auratus cafer)

He was in and out of the hole, intermittently going woikawoikawoika, the mating/territorial call. Persisted for at least 15 minutes.
Habitat
wooded city park
Location
Lincoln Park, Seattle, Washington
Date taken
April 23, 2009
Scientific name
Colaptes auratus cafer
Equipment used
Nikon ED50 A spotting scope, 16x Wide DS eyepiece, Nikon P5100 camera
Its amazing just how effective the birds plumage blends in with the bark of the tree. I hope he was successful in finding a mate :t:

We'd seen a female hanging around that hole back in December (see link below), and wondered whether she was looking for food or a possible nest, but I was skeptical: it's near a picnic area, a few yards from a childrens' swing set, closer yet to a well-traveled path and maybe eight feet off the ground. We'll keep an eye on it; if they nest there, I'm sure to get pictures.
