Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus)

It made me jump out of my skin when it flew from about three feet from me to this branch. I hadn't seen it at all, it was on the other side of tree without making any noise. I have been lucky for this one, it perched just few feet from me.

LOL Birds just love doing that to us, don't they Jean-Claude!!! The times it's happened to me (especially pheasants exploding out of the long grass beside the path!!!)

How nice of him to settle on this branch to give you that pose too..... you sure didn't waste the opportunity, did you lad.

Thanks for showing him to us.

Thanks Stanley, MI_PHIL, peterday, Neil, and delia todd for your kind comments. It's appreciated. Unfortunately, the bird didn't stay put on this branch very long just the time of a few clicks and "bonjour les amis".

WOW. I am so jealous. These guys could jump out of nowhere and scare the pants off me all day and I wouldn't mind, hahah! I'd do just about anything to get a beautiful photo like this on my camera, very well done!

Thank you very much Fraulein ash, in fact, it doesn't matter if they make me jump as long as, for being forgiven, I can take a photo after!

A striking shot and a wonderful profile portrait.
