Sierra Nevada Antpitta
Very limited range endemic Antpitta. Although we heard 2 or 3 birds this was the only one we managed to see as it perched briefly in a dense clump of bamboo by the track on the San Lorenzo ridge in Colombia’s Santa Marta Mountains. Challenging to photograph given virtually no light and how the bird was always at least partially obscured by leaves.

Formerly considered to be a subspecies of what used to be called Rufous Antpitta and I think currently missing a photograph in Opus.
Habitat
Open high elevation cloud forest.
Location
San Lorenzo ridge/Santa Marta range (Magdalena/Colombia)
Date taken
21st November 2023
Scientific name
Grallaria spatiator
Equipment used

A great find, CB. And a charming one, giving you a head turn posing for the shot.

What a wonderful find for you Chris, very well done on finding this rarity and even managing to get a decent image of him.

Fabulous work lad - it will be entered onto the Opus page very shortly. Thanks so much for sharing it with us.

If interested, here are a couple of other angles on the same bird, same perch (same leaf partially in front!) but showing more features (assuming my link from Flickr works ...):
