Sword-tailed Newt (Cynops ensicauda)
I originally assumed this was the widespread Japanese Fire-bellied Newt (C. pyrrhogaster). However the newts on the Ryukyu Archipelago including Amami Oshima, are actually this very rare, critically endangered Sword-tailed Newt. It may be distinguished from the Fire-bellied Newt by its larger size, broader head, longer tail (especially females), smoother skin, and pale toe pads. Like their similar cousins, this species is highly toxic if ingested. The main threats are deforestation and development as well as introduced carp in their breeding ponds. Two subspecies are recognized. This is the nominate race. Another race breeds on Okinawa.

I love newts. When I was in my early twenties, I camped a few times in an area that is now known as the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve. I loved seeing the California Newts that lived in the streams up there. There were so many then. That was the early 70s, no doubt I wouldn't see any if I went today.
