The Death of Aeschlyus (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)

Wikipedia: "455 BC: Aeschylus, the great Athenian author of tragedies. Valerius Maximus wrote that he was killed by a tortoise dropped by an eagle that had mistaken his bald head for a rock suitable for shattering the shell of the reptile. Pliny, in his Naturalis Histori, adds that Aeschylus had been staying outdoors to avert a prophecy that he would be killed by a falling object.[9][10][11]".

Great goodness!!!! ..... or "Cor blimey!" as they would say in London LOL.

What a great picture to get, and such an interesting post too. Thanks so much for sharing this image with us Hugh.

I suppose the eagle's bill is quite capable of getting through the shell.

What a great moment to capture. I've seen them pick up Mallards, Frogs but never turtles.

Awesome action and behavior picture Hugh. For some reason I never thought of Turtles being on the menu for Bald Eagles. Exceptional work and a brilliant narrative to accompany it!!! TFS!!!!

Thank you.
The park rangers informed me that they often see turtle shells in eagle's nests.
