Turkey Vulture
Taken at the Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline at about 100m.

I'll be the first to admit getting such a clear photo of a moving bird, slow soaring or not, at this distance, with a bridge camera, is as much luck as it is skill.

But we had a few low-soaring Turkey Vultures the entire time we were out so I had lots and lots of chances to try and get it right.

So here he is soaring low over the Arrowhead Marsh. That's the Oakland, CA skyline in the background.

[Once I realized I goofed and forgot to straighten out the crooked photo, I finally got around to posting it straightened out here.]

I like the setting for this, Kevin - nature v the city. A great action shot.

Kits,

It's one of the small but important joys of living in the San Francisco Bay Area. Say what you will about the oddball and expensive liberal policies in this state, the tree huggers have made sure there are lots of wild, protected spaces spread around the urban density.

I've had people from Stockton and Sacramento comment how the SF area has all these secluded surprises, some of them quite large, smack in the middle of busy suburban and urban areas. Turn a corner and...wham...acres and acres that make you think you're miles from civilization, and in many cases not very many people visiting at one time. At times I take it for granted (lived my whole life here), but I always try to remind myself how special that is.

And I will go to my grave thanking all those "liberal tree huggers" for that, despite everything else I dislike about living in an urban/suburban environment. ;-p

Three fine uploads Calvin. We all take things for granted but it's great to have this on your doorstep.
