Weaponized Brewer's? (Euphagus cyanocephalus)

Sitting in a lecture hall at the moment, listening to a lecture on cyberwar. Somehow this shot seemed the most appropriate one to post. I'm not sure what these quills are about. They reminded me of the spurs on Southern Lapwings, but they could also just be new feathers (leucistic ones?) emerging.
Habitat
coastal park
Location
Bodega Head, CA

Scientific name
Euphagus cyanocephalus

Oh my goodness Ann. What a picture to get of this fierce looking guy.

Those two 'spurs' look amazing, don't they. I really can't make out what they are, and Googling has been no help either. Maybe I'll ask the Opus Editors if they've any ideas.

A super picture this - very well done lassie.

Excellent shot, and looking at that facial expression, I'm not going to be the one to ask him about the quills....! Brilliant!

This blackbird certainly has the mean look to cause mental consternation if not some physical damage as well. He is probably just a big marshmallow (lol). Great close-up Doc!!!
