These have just been blooming here in Helena - Interesting little plant as you can see (I hope). First a "flower" of leaves opens revealing a ball-shaped cluster of buds from which the real flowers emerge. These were probably 8-10 inches tall, with the cluster of flowers as seen in lower left approx one and a half inches across. Anyone ?

Its a member of the family Lamiaceae, thats for certain. It may well be in the genus Monarda.
