Are there companies which organize self-driven tours?

Thanks (and I like your username). I'm not looking for a guide, and I don't mind figuring out the food, cars, and lodging myself. I'm just looking for someone to help figure out where to go to maximize birding experiences. I'll look into Naturetrek.

Thanks for letting me know about Naturetrek. I'm curious why you probably won't use their itinerary though. Why is that?

Are there companies which organize self-driven tours?

Does anyone know of a self-drive tour option for Australia? I usually enjoy putting in quite a bit of planning and studying prior to a trip, but its looking like I won't have the time prior to what I hope will be a trip around this October. Did OP end up trying one of these self-drive tours?

Lens hood for the Canon 10x42is l

I also use cheap photographic hoods for protection from vegetation while hiking, rain, sea spray, wayward fingers, and the like. The only time I take them off is to put the binoculars into their carrying case for air travel.

Puerto Rican Flycatcher or Gray Kingbird? Old San Juan, Puerto Rico

Gray head with a black mask points to a Gray Kingbird in first four. 4866 is harder to judge from the photo, but looks like a Gray Kingbird too. Yes, looks like an unfortunate Greater Antillean Grackle.

Uganda and Rwanda: 1 to 22 June 2024

Reasonable advice for those with the time and money. For some, it may be their best shot. I find it hard to look down much on birders for effort and passion put into pursuing a potential lifer.

    Redpoll but which?

Maybe another way to put it is if I saw this bird, I wouldn't give a 2nd thought to it being a hoary instead of a common. Perhaps that is too cavalier though.

    Redpoll but which?

To clarify - I was trying to say that my knowledge is a little rusty on this tricky species pair, so I should review online photos. After a quick check of online photos, your bird still very much looks like a of Common Redpoll. I just don't currently have the knowledge to make the call with...

ID for this grebe please, San Joaquin Marsh Reserve, California, USA, september 2023.

This is a tricky one, and the photo quality may be insufficient to make a determination.

    Redpoll but which?

The bill is quite large, the streaking is fairly heavy, and the bird isn't "frosty," so I'm leaning heavily towards common. I would need to review some photos before I could make this claim with high certainty.

    Madeira

I didn't go to the gardens, but I did the night tour for petrels. I went on/near a full moon and thankfully had cloudless skies. In addition to hearing them frequently, I saw them fairly often, some surprisingly close. I also went on the windbird tours and saw them there.

AX Visio: is it really as bad as some reviewers claim??

Are the examples that Canip provided a case where Visio indicates detection failure, but in 4 of the 5 cases, Merlin detects and correctly identifies the bird? I've not used the Visio, but I've used other automated identification apps where a simple image crop made the difference between...

Bad Photo Horned Grebe and Bufflehead? Connecticut USA 2/24/24

Agreed that you might want to let go of an ID on that one, especially without any other photos or observer notes.

AX Visio: is it really as bad as some reviewers claim??

Playing that game could be helpful in indicating where the automated identification tool should focus. Removing unnecessary parts of the image (parts of the image not containing a bird) could be helpful in allowing the tool to detect and then identify a bird. What is perceived as an...

    Fringillidae

Is there no exception to this checklist requirement for reporting potentially misidentified species? I haven't found one in the past and have subsequently let seemingly incorrect identifications remain in the database. Maybe there could be a thread for reporting these so that a 100-per-year...
