Little Ringer Plover or Ringed Plover - U.K.

Thanks for the info, that’s really helpful. If I hadn’t previously been advised the birds in the images were LRPs I would be unsure as to which they were. Given the bad quality of the images though, would you say these birds are actually unidentifiable or is there enough evidence (general...

Little Ringer Plover or Ringed Plover - U.K.

Hi Inland location at a gravel pit in Gloucestershire yesterday, two birds were at a distance hence the very blurry/cropped shots. I’ve been advised they are LRP, I’m not used to seeing either LRP or RP so would like some advice as to what features give these away as LRPs. Many thanks

    Soaring Sparrowhawks in January? (UK)

Great thanks Ken, that's very interesting and indeed might be worth another visit. I was not aware SP soared outside of breeding season!

    Soaring Sparrowhawks in January? (UK)

Hi there Was out birding today and over a large lake in inland Gloucestershire I saw a bird of prey soaring above it, not ridiculously high but certainly above the tree line. My first impression was Peregrine, it didn't circle as if on thermals, it glided across the sky and changed direction...

    Kestrel flap-flap-glide, UK?

Apologies for slow reply but thank you for your response. I've learnt a great deal! :t:

    Kestrel flap-flap-glide, UK?

Great, thanks for your feedback, I don't see SP in the open all that often so was expecting Kestrel and was thrown by the flight style but by the sounds of it its behaviour does point to SP. Out of curiosity have you ever seen a kestrel fly like this, i.e. flap-flap-glide low to the ground or...

    Kestrel flap-flap-glide, UK?

Thanks for your feedback. Have you ever seen a Kestrel flap-flap-glide or is that Sparrowhawk behaviour only?

    Kestrel flap-flap-glide, UK?

Not that I'm aware of. I certainly have never seen one at this location and although difficult to always tell I would say this bird was too big for a Merlin.

    Kestrel flap-flap-glide, UK?

So out walking today (UK), spotted what I believed was a kestrel perched on top of a small bush/tree adjacent to a field. Something wasn't quite right about it though, size and shape spot on but colouring looked different, seemed darker. Anyways, it took flight, went low straight away and...

    Tiny hummingbird/Subird?

Ah a twist in the story! I've learnt two things exist today, "reverse image search" and "Crimson Topaz". The fact it's a sculpture explains the size and the "not quite right" aspect of it but lovely to now see that it was based on a real bird, I always hoped it was which is why I've tried so...

    Tiny hummingbird/Subird?

Ahhh I thought something was not quite right! Had me searching image after image and just couldn't place it. Sometimes the internet giveth and sometimes it taketh away. Today it took away an hour of my life I wont have back, *shakes fist*

    Tiny hummingbird/Subird?

Friend forwarded me this picture, I believe it's been on the internet a while and done the rounds. Does anybody know what it is? It's Bee Hummingbird tiny but I didn't know of any hummer this colour, all I could think is some kind of sunbird? Anybody know? Is it even real?

    Goshawks & Buzzards, UK

Thanks Tom. Was this also during the breeding season or do you suppose this behaviour is possible year round?
